The best way to learn the French tenses or tenses in general is to break them down as I’ve done below and then move on to the tenses altogether in their complete glory.

Understanding the terms used above:
personal ( personnel) - verb changes according to subject - he has, I have
impersonal - stays same no matter what.
What exactly is the tone of the sentence?
-Is it imposing conditions (conditionnel)?
ex: I would like to have some tea- Je voudrais du thé.
-Is it indicating something that is done or being done at a specific point in time (indicatif)?
ex: I’m having some tea- je prends du thé.
Is it in an authoritative tone (impératif)?
Listen! - Entendu!
Is it expressing the WEIRDO list: wishes, emotions, or something impersonal (il)? Is it a request, requirement, recommendation, a doubt, denial, demand, or an opinion? ——Le mode subjonctif.
